Discipline Description: Please use the following more as a guideline of the residency offered rather than a solidified version of it. No two institutions are the same, so using this format, we will work with your school to create the most optimal residency for your students.
For a well-rounded mental, artistic and physically engaging class, learning musical theater is optimal for the students. Students will learn everything it takes to be an actor/actress on Broadway.
* Note... due to the volume of disciplines involved, it is recommended that this be selected for 8+ week residencies.
-
Acting
- All the Musical Theater residencies will begin with the Basics of Acting/Improvisation as described in section a.
- Shorter residencies will touch on the technique character creation.
- Longer residencies will explore and play with improvisation to allow the students to create characters and scenes for a specific circumstance. In the case of this residency, this will pertain to the ensemble piece that will be chosen (see Music below) which the students will perform at the conclusion of the residency.
-
Music
- Each student will be given the music to a song from a popular musical with which they will learn the basics of reading and learning music from paper.
- Applying the above, they will be taught basic vocal technique and diction, centered around the principle "singing is speaking on pitch."
- In longer residencies, and based on the level of musicality with the students, more in depth techniques to singing will be taught, most prominently harmonizing.
-
Movement/Dance
- Through a series of games and fun cardio active activities, the students will learn stage directions and the basic principles of walking and moving on beat to the music.
- The primary focus of this section, though, is to introduce the students to the definition of choreography and applying it to their musical theater piece.
-
Performance
- Throughout the program, in all the disciplines, the students will be learning the principles of performing, stage etiquette and professionalism of an actor and audience member by a variety of games and activities.
- All the residencies conclude with a performance of the musical theater piece the students were given on their first day. Shorter programs will display the basic knowledge they have had a chance to learn while the longer programs will offer a chance for a more in depth and spotlighted performance utilizing all the assets of Musical Theater.
